एक्स्पायरी म्हणजे काय?

अरे, ते औषध मेडिकल वाल्याला देऊन टाक. ते एक्सपायर झालं आहे, असे आपले घरचे आपल्याला सांगतात. पण औषध एक्सपायर होतं म्हणजे नक्की काय होतं हेच आपल्याला कळत नाही. काहींना असं वाटतं औषध एक्सपायर झालं म्हणजे त्यात विष तयार झालं आहे. तर औषध एक्सपायर होतं म्हणजे त्याच्या लेबलवर त्या औषधाची जी Strength लिहिलेली असते, (उदा. अमुक एका गोळीवर लिहिलेले असते Each Tablet Contains Paracetamol 500 mg, तर 500 mg ही झाली या औषधाची Strength) ती ज्या दिवशी 10 % ने कमी होते ती झाली त्या औषधाची Expiry Date!
Expiry Date साठी वापरला जाणारे शास्त्रीय नाव आहे t-90%. यातला t म्हणजे Time. औषध जेव्हा 90% उरते (म्हणजेच 10% ने कमी होते) तो वेळ म्हणजेच Expiry Date. म्हणजेच Expiry Date जेव्हा उजाडते तेव्हा त्यावर दिलेल्या Dose पेक्षा औषधाची मात्रा कमी झालेली असते. त्यामुळे त्याचा परिणाम थोडा फार कमी होतो, तो शून्य होतो असे अजिबात नव्हे.
औषधाची Strength 10% ने कमी होते. पण म्हणजे नक्की काय होतं? तर औषध हे एक रसायन आहे आणि काळानुसार ते हळू-हळू रासायनिक क्रियामुळे हानिकारक होते. हवेतील Oxygen मुळे Oxidation होऊन किंवा हायड्रोजनमुळे Reduction होऊन किंवा सूर्यप्रकाशामुळे किंवा इतर असंख्य रासायनिक क्रियामुळे हे औषध हानिकारक होते आणि जसजसा वेळ जाईल तसतसे ते हानिकारक होऊन त्याचे इतर पदार्थात रुपांतर होते.
एका औषधाचे वेगवेगळ्या मार्गाने Degradation होऊ शकते आणि त्यामुळे एकाच वेळी त्याची वेगवेगळी Reaction Products बनू शकतात. ही Reaction Products निरुपद्रवी असतील तर त्याचा परिणाम इतकाच होतो कि औषधाची Strength कमी होते. पण कधी-कधी मात्र ही Reaction Products अपायकारक असूही शकतात. Expiry Date नंतरचा असा अभ्यास मात्र कंपनीने केलेला नसतो.
जर औषधावर लिहिलेली Expiry Date 2 वर्षे आहे. तर मग जो अभ्यास केला जातो तो या 2 वर्षांचाच असतो. पण समजा हे औषध 2-3 वेगवेगळ्या Degradation Pathways ने Degrade होते आहे, ज्यातला एक Pathway अत्यंत संथ आहे, त्याचे Reaction Product 4 वर्षानंतर बनतेय आणि ते अपायकारक आहे, आणि असे औषध जर कुणी Expiry Date नंतर घेतले तर अपाय होऊ शकतो.
Don't ever use insulin, eye drops and antibiotics beyond their expiration date. These medications typically have a discard date which kicks in once they are opened. Do not use any medicine with a “discard date” beyond this date, under any circumstances.

Avoid using liquid medications after they expire. (Tablets and capsules are more stable than liquid medications.) Don't use medicines that have been exposed to light, heat, or moisture beyond their use by date.

Further Medication Safety Precautions

Although taking medicines such as acetaminophen or diarrhea capsules beyond their expiration date is acceptable as a last resort, it is still not recommended. Use these items only in an emergency situation, where no other possible alternatives exist. You should safely dispose of old medication (see FDA safe medicine disposal guidelines) and replace it as soon as possible.

Potency and effectiveness of the medicine may decline after it reaches its expiration date. That said, it is still vital that you stick to the recommended dosage for any medicine. Don't try to compensate for this loss of effectiveness by exceeding the recommended dosage. If in doubt as to whether your medicine is safe to consume, avoid doing so and check with a pharmacist.
